Amendments banning gay marriage have passed in Florida and Arizona while Arkansas votes to make adoptions by gay couples illegal.  California is still too close to call, but appears to have passed the anti equality proposition.

What shocks me is how we allow the majority to potentially strip away the rights of the minority.  If in fact Proposition 8 passes in California, it will be the first time Americans votes will take the people’s granted rights away.  I do not feel like there is liberty and justice for all, and how can I feel that all men are created equal.

What further saddens me is exit poll data from California that suggest that blacks overwhelming voted for discrimination and inequality.  How can they expect to move on and grow and achieve equality themselves if they participate in discrimination.  Obama won the presidency on a hope for change, and I do hope that change comes but tonight GLBT Americans were sorely reminded the equality does not exist for them.  Black leaders including Obama must address this discrimination by African Americans if we are to achieve hope and change.

We must continue to wait for millions of early and absentee ballots to be voted in California, some groups are optomistic that those votes will kill the proposition.  It currently stands at 52% in favour to 48% against.

But we must continue to fight; we will be free one day!

In positive news, Connecticut did not vote to have a Constitutional Convention, a first step towards amending their constitution.  Connecticut will start gay marriages on November 11th.
